I read this last night but was too sleepy to comment (I'm old and work early). I too am an athlete in the overthinking Olympics. I understood all too well that part of your story. I am super glad you went from economics to faders. I've enjoyed everything I've heard from you, you're one of my favorites in our feedback calls.

The terrifying leap that comes to mind for me was joining the Army. I was a guitarist in the Army band, so it was a great and stable way to both get a musical education and make a paycheck. And also get in shape. But going away to basic training and leaving home for the first time was fucking terrifying. I cried the night before I left. But it was one of the best things I've ever done.

Thanks for reading Paul, that’s really kind of you to say too! Likewise! I’ve really enjoyed hearing your various covers and particularly ‘Little Ghosts’ as it’s developed!

Wow, I bet that must have been incredibly scary at the time. I can only imagine how you felt in the build up to it. I guess the way I can relate is when your mind is saying “I need to do this” so much when you feel stuck but as the time gets nearer it starts wondering whether it’s a good idea still. You know it’s the right thing to do but the fear tries to say otherwise. However, moving away to music school seems a whole lot easier than the army!😅 Lots of respect for that👏

Yup, that was pretty much the thought process!

I felt this. That same leap you describe is what pulled me out of the restaurant grind and back into music full time. Terrifying. But everything shifted after. Great article man.

Hell yeah man! That’s great. It’s so easy to get stuck in that loop where the days just roll by isn’t it. Especially working hospitality…

Glad you enjoyed and cheers for reading!

I'm sure if I look hard enough I could find out what MYLWD stands for.

Gotta say, those years learning your craft are paying off. Love am your work and maybe someday we will get to work together.

Play on...

Thanks so much Don! That’s very kind. Yes absolutely if you ever have anything you would like to work together on, give me a shout!

MYLWD is a shortened version of my surname Mylward which people have had a hard time pronouncing correctly in the past but I guess this name is just as confusing!😆

This was soo well written! Definitely relate. I think moving to NY to go NYU, and then deciding to come back after 2 years.. ended up being a scary.. but important decision that made me who I am today. Thanks for sharing your story.

Really great insightful thinking here. Wait until you get older and look back. I’m in my 60’s and had a very rough start as a kid. I wouldn’t trade any of it as it’s made me who I am today, it taught me when I wasn’t even listening. Good on you for noticing. Maybe we choose everything that happens to us. That idea has changed everything for me.
