Let Me Love You by Mario needs no introduction.
One of the best RnB songs to come out of the 2000s. It really has everything, the feel, the emotion, the sound choices. I love everything about it. So much so that I just had to cover it.
You hear a lot of advice around covering songs. Bring a new emotion out of it. Surprise us with different sound choices. Try it in a new genre. And don’t get me wrong, all of that is worth following when you’re genuinely re-imagining something.
But some songs are so powerful in their own skin that big changes take away exactly what makes them great in the first place.
Let Me Love You wouldn’t be the song it is without the sexy feel, the smooth vocals, the tight BVs doing the call and response in the pre-choruses. I could go and do a slowed down, mournful ballad version and yeah, that could be cool… but it wouldn’t have what I love most about it.
So that got me thinking. What can I actually do differently here?
Since this song isn’t too far from my own artist style, I blocked out the voice telling me it wasn’t inventive enough and just got to work.
I asked myself one question: how would I have made this if it had come to me 22 years later instead of Mario and his team?
Dry percussion. Even more stacked vocals. Smooth, lush synth soundscapes. Sexy groove. Intimate feel. That’s the formula, if you want to call it that, for how I approach most of my own music. I’m always trying to recreate through sound the moment you have your first kiss with someone. The excitement. The intimacy. That feeling of comfort and electricity when you cross that boundary of physical touch for the first time. If I could bottle that feeling it’d be priceless, so the best I can do is try to make you feel it through music.
I went through this whole process with no idea how it was going to turn out, which you can see happening in the video. Watching ideas thread together and start to become a song is exactly what I’m trying to show you. I hope the passion comes through, because this one ended up somewhere I really didn’t expect.
