SAMPLE SESSIONS: DURAN DURAN

Lessons Learned... Scroll down to hear the track.

Learning my way through the process

Every time I start a new song, I learn a lot. Not just technical stuff, spiritual too.

This time round, it’s been about timeframes.

I’ve always been pretty harsh on myself when it comes to getting a song or a video written, recorded, edited, exported and out within a couple of days. I want to give as much to you as possible, but I’m learning that can’t come at the expense of the actual inspiration. Forcing creativity is the number one way to kill it.

So here’s what I’ve picked up.

Not setting constraints on myself from the get go actually helps me create to a higher standard. Less pressure. And that pressure was always self imposed anyway.

Being a kid about it helps too. Just having fun with it, not caring if an idea doesn’t play out the way I expected.

This sample session started with an obscure jazz record I picked up crate digging at a vinyl market. Didn’t work out how I’d hoped. Usually that would bum me right out, but instead of sulking I just blind picked another record.

That’s how I landed on the Duran Duran record.

My only real experience with Duran Duran was through my mum’s car stereo. She’s a massive fan of all those 80s artists, Wham, Duran Duran, George Michael, the whole lot. So indirectly I’ve heard them loads, but I’d never have thought to actually sample one of their tracks.

That’s exactly why I love SAMPLE SESSIONS. It pushes me into stuff way outside my comfort zone.

So on that note, I hope you enjoy episode 2. This one came from pure fun.
